Chemical Peels
Targets
Sunspots, hyperpigmentation, melasma, uneven skin tone, dull skin, acne, acne scarring, texture, collagen building, fine lines, and wrinkles.
Overview
VI Peel is a medium-strength, medical-grade chemical peel that helps to minimize signs of aging, including fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, melasma, uneven skin texture, dullness and tone.
VI Peel’s version of a chemical peel offers a safer alternative to mechanical or physical exfoliation. VI Peel can address multiple skin issues simultaneously, from texture, to pigment, to acne, all in one in-office visit.
Treatment Plan
VI Peel treatment for corrective results are typically performed in a series of 3-6 treatments, which can be spaced as soon as 4-6 weeks apart to see accelerated improvements. Maintenance treatments are typically done every 3-4 months after your series is completed. Improved skin clarity and radiance are seen directly post peel week. You can also have the VI Peels quarterly/seasonally and receive 4 peels a year for the maintenance of healthy skin.
Can The VI Peel Make Me Breakout Or Purge?
Purging or experiencing mild acne breakouts after getting a VI Peel is completely normal. This type of acne purging can happen after any exfoliating treatment, as the treatment increases cellular turnover, not only lifting dead skin cells but also allowing for any congestion that is trapped beneath the skin to come to the surface. It’s important to remember that your acne may seem to get worse before getting better, and you may need multiple VI Peel treatments to resolve your acne. Purging of the skin will reduce with subsequent peels as congested pores become cleared.
What To Expect
On the day of treatment, expect to have a VISIA Skin Analysis taken before your VI Peel to have your progress on record. Once your practitioner assesses your goals, they will apply one of VI Peel’s six unique chemical peel formula options. This painless application involves sweeping strokes of a liquid formula via a gauze, with time in between each layer for the product to absorb and the provider to assess your skin’s reaction.

Side Effects
Patients may experience itchiness in the treated area after their peel. This is entirely expected and is the body’s natural response to skin regeneration. Cases of extreme itchiness can sometimes be caused by a patient having an allergic reaction to an ingredient in the peel.
Edema is swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in the body’s tissues, and manifests as puffiness in the skin. It’s not uncommon for patients to develop some edema around their eyes after their VI Peel. Patients can mitigate edema by taking ibuprofen as directed, applying a cool compress to their face, and sleeping with their head slightly elevated. Discomfort typically subsides within 24–48 hours.
Blistering can occur if proper protocol isn’t followed. In order to avoid blistering and Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, it’s vital for patients to “stay cool” for 72-96 hours after their treatment. This involves maintaining low body temperatures both internally and on their body surface. To avoid unsafe increases in body surface temperature, patients should avoid direct sun exposure and wear a well-ventilated hat to protect from UV-rays as well as abstain from exercise.

FAQs
At Elinea Med Spa, we can customize the intensity—or depth—of your chemical peel. There are 3 basic levels of a chemical peel.
Light Peel
Light peels are ideal for first-time patients and anyone who has sensitive skin. A light peel addresses:
- Skin texture
- Uneven skin tone
- Fine lines
- Acne
- Acne scarring
- Dull skin
- Clogged pores
Medium Peel
This depth delivers more dramatic results, though it does require a longer recovery period. It achieves what the light peel accomplishes, plus addresses more pronounced:
- Lines/wrinkles
- Uneven skin tone/hyperpigmentation
- Sun spots
- More severe skin texture issues
- Acne scars
Deep Peel
This peel applies the strongest ingredients for deep shedding and surface remodeling. This will invoke the longest recovery period and will likely require full sedation. The results of a deep peel can last from years to a lifetime.
This peel depth helps patients with extensive:
- Wrinkles
- Scarring
- Sun damage
- Actinic keratoses (precancerous growths)
Much of the chemical peel process is relaxing. When the peeling agents are applied to the skin of your treatment area, you may feel a mild, temporary stinging sensation for the first few minutes, Most patients find it easily tolerable. Our neutralizer stops the chemical peel action, and for the next few days your skin may have the sensation similar to a light sunburn. As the old, tired skin sloughs off, fresh & healthy skin replaces it, with improved collagen production for better skin tone, texture, and health.
In San Francisco, anyone who wants healthier skin with fewer wrinkles, lines, hyperpigmentation, scarring, or anyone who wants their skin to have that youthful glow, is a great candidate for a chemical peel. However, anyone with the following conditions should avoid a chemical peel:
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Active cold sores in the treatment area
- Warts in the treatment area
- Autoimmune disease
- Wounds/abrasions in the treatment area
- Aspirin allergy
- Accutane use within the last year
- Recent or current hemotherapy or radiation therapy
- Vitiligo
