Targets
Full facial rejuvenation, nasolabial folds (smile lines), temples, cheeks, midface, jowls, marionette lines.
Overview
Sculptra® and dilute Radiesse® are both collagen builders, which are cosmetic procedures to smoothen fine lines and wrinkles.
Sculptra, also known as poly-L-lactic acid, is a polymer similar to the substance found in dissolvable stitches. Once Sculptra is injected, it recruits cells known as macrophages and fibroblasts to work together to dissolve Sculptra and replace it with collagen, providing structure, support and strength to your skin.
Unlike dermal fillers – whose volumizing effects are immediate – Sculptra takes about three months to take effect, typically over two to three treatment visits. Results from Sculptra typically last 2-3 years or longer.
Treatment Plan
Treatment protocol involves at least two visits initially, spaced one to two months apart. Maintenance treatments are recommended yearly, or as needed.
What To Expect
If it’s your first time receiving Sculptra, you’ll have a separate consultation with the provider to assess your goals and develop a customized treatment plan. On the day of your treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area for approximately 20 minutes. The treatment itself takes 20 to 30 minutes.
Pre-Treatment Instructions
Before undergoing Sculptra treatment, it’s essential to prepare your body to minimize potential side effects and ensure the best possible outcome. Here are some guidelines to follow:
- Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications and Supplements: For 10-14 days prior to your treatment, steer clear of anti-inflammatory or blood-thinning medications such as Aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, and any NSAIDs. If you are on any medications for a heart or autoimmune condition, discuss with your injector prior to stopping any medications – most likely you will need to stay on these medications even if they cause blood thinning.
- Avoid Supplements: Avoid supplements like Vitamin E, Gingko Bilboa, Ginseng, St. John’s Wort, and Omega 3 / Fish Oil Supplements, as they can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections.
- Discontinue Certain Skincare Products: Stop using products containing retinoids, chemical and manual exfoliants, and any potentially irritating ingredients like Glycolic Acid, Vitamin A or C, Salicylic Acid.
- Avoid Alcohol: Refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages and limit caffeine intake 48 hours before your treatment to reduce the risk of bruising.
- Stay Hydrated: Increase your water intake 24 hours before the treatment.
- Cold Sore Precautions: If you have a history of cold sore, inform your provider. A prescription for antiviral medication may be necessary to prevent a breakout post-treatment.
- Arrive with a Clean Face: Come to your appointment without makeup, creams, gels, or lotions.
Post-Treatment Instructions
After your Sculptra treatment, following the right aftercare instructions is crucial for healing and achieving the desired results:
- Massage the Treated Area: Firmly massage the entire treatment area 5 times daily for 5 minutes for 5 days with your fingers using a moisturizer or Arnica cream. This helps distribute the product evenly.
- Avoid Strenuous Exercise: Refrain from vigorous physical activities for 24 hours to reduce the risk of bruising or swelling.
- Avoid Certain Medications and Supplements: Continue to avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements for at least two days to minimize bruising.
- Follow Up Treatments: Sculptra usually requires multiple sessions for optimal results. Follow your provider’s recommendations for scheduling follow-up treatments.
- Monitor for Adverse Reactions: If you experience any signs of infection, significant pain not relieved by Tylenol, severe swelling, redness, or bruising that does not improve after two weeks, contact your provider immediately.
Side Effects
Common side effects of collagen builders include minor swelling, bruising, and redness at the injection site immediately after treatment. Adverse side effects are uncommon but may occur.
